About the Author

I am a writer of fiction with three full length manuscripts completed. The first – The Time of the Lilyweeds – is an Australian historical fiction featured in this website. It was a winner of the HarperCollins Varuna Fellowship in 2013 and has undergone a major rewrite during a 12 month mentorship awarded to me by the Australian Society of Authors for 2015. I have recently been signed by The Cameron Creswell Agency in Sydney for promotion of this manuscript.

My second manuscript – The Tenant at Holders Farm – is a mystery/romance set in Paris and Byron Bay. It was a runner-up in the Fellowship of Australian Writers Jim Hamilton long fiction awards in 2014.

The third manuscript is entitled Strictly No Thongs on the Dance Floor, a comedy/romance  about a very unlikely affair between a sophisticated 50-something year old city divorcée and a much younger man from Woondibut North in country Victoria. Sheep droppings, outdoor dunnies and wild rides on his quad bike are involved.

I have had 4 short stories published in separate Stringybark Anthologies:
“Obsession” in Role of a Lifetime (2014) and “The Man of the House” in Standing By (2016),  “The Transformation of Mrs Keets” in A Nice Boy (2017) and “Bad Seed” in Gift of a Casserole & Other Deadly Sins (2017)

My first Flash Fiction piece “Saint Ned”, was one of 6 winners in the international flash fiction competition 1000 Words of Less, published in June 2016.

I had an essay published in The Victorian Writer  in June 2017 and an article in The Big Issue in March 2016. Another piece has been accepted for publication in The Big Issue later this year (2018).

In 2016 and 2017 I was shortlisted for the Scarlet Stiletto Award and won Special Commendation prizes for my stories ‘The Trap’ and ‘Timberrr!’ respectively.

Currently I am in my final year of the Associate Degree in Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT.

I write a blog called Reading, Writing and a Few Dog Stories at http://www.gabriellegardner.com.au

In order to be in touch with other writers and the industry generally I have recently started to tweet at https://twitter.com/gabygard1218.

My dog Archie tweets at https://twitter.com/Archie_Spaniel. So far he has more followers than I do.
